There is no doubt that left-wing politics trumps the rule of law in these parts. New York State Chief Justice Rowan Wilson has just approached far-left actress Cynthia Nixon to help select future members of the Supreme Court.
She’s not a lawyer; she only played one on TV – but that, along with her far-left reputation, is apparently enough to qualify her for the Commission on Judicial Nomination, where she will recommend judges to serve on the Court of Appeal.
The one-party regime has only made this state more dysfunctional.
Wilson himself only became top judge because lawmakers openly refused to accept anything other than a far-left party member in the position.
They straight up murdered the eminently qualified Hector LaSalle, Governor Kathy Hochul’s choice, because he wouldn’t commit to twisting the law to impose their agenda without actually having to put it into law.
Yes, Wilson is a lawyer (unlike Nixon) and even served on the Supreme Court before becoming chief judge, but he has inappropriately campaigned for legislation (which spawned an ethics complaint) and against long prison sentences.
And he has even scolded judges for using foul language against monstrous criminals whose cause he champions.
That’s not the kind of neutrality expected of judges, let alone those of the state’s highest court.
But it is precisely these prejudices that make him so attractive to left-wing lawmakers.
And now he has approached Nixon, who ran for office in 2018 on a far-left platform, to help choose future Supreme Court justices.
She may not know anything about the state constitution, the law in general, or what makes a good lawyer, but she’s built a solid reputation among the far left — and that’s all that matters.
She now has real power: Governors can choose only from the commission’s nominees when tapping new judges for the state’s highest court.
The dirty games that made Wilson chief justice have already led the Supreme Court to gerrymander election districts, and now it is likely to see even more contempt for the letter and even the spirit of the law.
