CHICAGO – A man with a pending juvenile gun case has become the 25th person charged in Chicago this year with shooting, killing or attempting to shoot or kill someone while released pending trial. The crimes involved forty victims, eight of whom died.
Marque McCray was held over safety concerns by Judge Caroline Glennon-Goodman, who cited the outstanding juvenile weapons warrant as one of the reasons she decided to keep him in jail.
Prosecutors told Glennon-Goodman that multiple witnesses identified McCray as the man who fatally shot 47-year-old Royal Darring on June 25.
The men were in the 8700 block of South Carpenter around 3:15 p.m. when, according to the charges, McCray confronted Darring about a previous incident involving Darring and a third person. Their disagreement escalated into an argument and became physical, prosecutors said.
McCray is accused of pulling a gun and shooting Darring multiple times. He is charged with first-degree murder.
The series ‘not terrible’
This report continues our coverage of individuals accused of killing, shooting or attempting to kill or shoot others while released into custody on a felony charge. CWBChicago began our series of reports in November 2019 after Cook County Chief Judge Timothy Evans publicly stated“There have been no terrible incidents” under the court’s bond reform initiative.
On September 18, 2023, Illinois eliminated cash bail entirely. Our “not terrible” continues.
The actual number of murders and shootings committed by people awaiting trial on felony charges is undoubtedly much higher than the figures seen here. According to city data, CPD has reported fewer than 5% of non-fatal shootings and 33% of homicides since 2017.
