After the “Orca rebellion“Fascinated anti-capitalists around the world in 2023, scientists are intrigued by a different form of marine mammal communication.
A study This month released by the Seti Institute and the University of California in Davis diving into a newly documented phenomenon of humpbacks that blow bubble rings while interacting with people. In contrast to the aggressive behavior of the orcas, researchers say that the humpbacks seem to be friendly, relaxed and even curious.
Bubbles are not new for these water giants, which usually release different forms when correcting prey and hoping of partners. This study follows 12 different incidents with 11 whales that produce 39 rings, most of which have approached Hawaii, the Dominican Republic, Mo’orea and the American Atlantic Coast.
However, the impact of this research extends much further than the oceans. Deciphering these non-verbal messages can help with possible aliens communication, because they can help “develop filters that help pars cosmic signals for signs of extraterrestrial life,” says a statement.
“Due to the current limitations on technology, an important assumption of the search for alien intelligence is that alien intelligence and life will be interested in making contact and thus focus on human recipients,” said Dr. Laurance Doyle, a Seti Institute scientist who co-written the newspaper. “This important assumption is certainly supported by the independent evolution of curious behavior in humpbacks.” (Via Petapixel))
