If you have ever thought: “Wow, my phone is so boring”, then Infinix has something alone for you. At MWC 2025 the brand revealed its e-color Shift 2.0 concept. In essence, it is a telephone that changes its back design on request thanks to technology comparable to e-readers. And after I got hold of it, I can say with confidence … it’s really cool, as a bit exaggerated. But I can’t help it, but I think it would be more logical instead.
This is not the first time that Infinix plays with color-changing technology, but this new iteration records a notch. The back plate of the phone can move between different colors and patterns in real time. There is an AI-driven app with which you can make designs based on your environment, wallpaper or even the weather. Do you want your phone back to match your outfit? It only takes a few seconds. The only reservation? It needs a WiFi connection to process these changes, which seems like a strange limitation, but hey, it is a concept.
If you prefer to keep things simple, you can manually choose from six different patterns and six color palettes, giving you 30 unique combinations. Although the color options are still a bit limited, I would expect this to change as soon as the technology matures. Yet the adjustment aspect is fun, and it is an easy way to distinguish your phone from the sea of boring black plates that are there.
But of course there are some disadvantages. The color change area is not the entire back of the telephone. Instead, it is a smaller panel surrounded by a thick white ring that kills the illusion somewhat. And although Infinix claims that power consumption is minimal (thanks to e-ink-like efficiency), I would still like to see the long-term battery impact before I became too enthusiastic. I will say it didn’t seem to make a huge difference during the few days that I had the phone.
This concept was built on the Infinix Zero 40 -Smartphone, which was launched last August. That means that you look under the hood at a 6.78-inch-bent display, a MediaTek Dimensity 8200 chipset, 12 GB RAM and a 5000 mAh battery-all respectable specifications for a mid-range device. The curved back design also helps to make it feel thinner in the hand, which is a nice touch.
In contrast to most concept technology that never leaves the showroom floor, E-Color Shift 2.0 is already functional and Infinix believes that it is earlier for a mainstream device. It would not surprise me if we saw this technology popping up in a real retail telephone the following year or so.
But I’m not sure if that’s the right approach. Most people (I am excluded, to the great horror of many) hit a phone case on the back of their handset. So you can’t see the back. In fact, I would almost claim that smartphone designs are not that important these days. So it seems somewhat short-sighted to make a design-changing smartphone-striking side, while most would like to cover it.
Instead, this technology must be applied to a smartphone case network as Infinix’s own solar-loading smartphone concept. In that case, people can actually see and enjoy their tailor -made telephone design, instead of covering it with some silicone.
Does the world need AI-driven color shifts? Probably not. But is it a fun, unique way to add personality to your device? Absolute. Whether or not this function catches is still to be seen, but one thing is certain – Infinix is determined to distinguish itself from the crowd.
