CHICAGO – A parolee is facing attempted murder charges, accused of shooting two men as they ran from a murder scene near the Howard CTA station. Both men Kevin Humes allegedly shot at also face charges in connection with the Oct. 23 shooting in the 1600 block of West Howard.

The entire episode was captured on video, which we share below.

Reynolds

According to complaints and warrants filed against the three men, Latrell Reynolds, 20, and Clifford Murphy, 18, were walking east on Howard Street when 29-year-old Marlon Scott approached them around 3 p.m. three men arguing on the sidewalk.

Within seconds, the men, identified as Reynolds and Murphy, stood up and continued east while Scott remained on the sidewalk, fatally wounded. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

While all that was happening, a man, identified as Hume, was sitting outside a nearby storefront. As a woman with a stroller tried to maneuver away from the altercation unfolding in front of her, the man, identified as Hume, appeared to grab a firearm, which he fired at the fleeing men. Prosecutors said Reynolds and Murphy were also shot during or immediately after the altercation.

Here’s the video footage, which we partially pixelated to hide Scott lying on the sidewalk.

Prosecutors said Reynolds suffered gunshot wounds to his shoulder and leg. They said he admitted to having a firearm, which video surveillance allegedly showed he was fleeing when he got into a getaway car. He is charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated battery in a public place.

After the altercation, Murphy was found outside nearby Gale Elementary School with a through-and-through gunshot wound that entered his back and exited his chest, officials said.

Police allegedly found a gun in his waistband. Police said the gun was not loaded but was equipped with an automatic fire switch, making it capable of firing multiple rounds with a single pull of the trigger. He is accused of unlawful use of a machine gun.

Humes is accused of shooting Murphy in the back as he fled. He is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery by discharging a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

Judge Caroline Glennon Goodman granted the state’s detention request for Humes. Judge Deidre Dyer denied the petition for Reynolds and released him on electronic monitoring. Judge Anthony Calabrese rejected the detainer request filed in Murphy’s case and released him pending trial.

Humes is on parole for violating a protective order. He was previously convicted in 2002 for being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was also convicted of narcotics charges four times between 1996 and 2002, according to Illinois Department of Corrections records.

No one is charged with shooting or killing Marlon Scott.

Chicago police records show that 20 people have been shot in the 1600 block of West Howard over the past two years. Only one other case has been reported. Two men, Lamont Vaughn and Brandon Henry, are accused of firing shots during altercations in the street that did not result in injuries.
