CHICAGO – A Cook County judge has denied a prosecutor’s request to keep a man in jail as a risk to public safety for allegedly shooting into an occupied car as Chicago police officers looked on.

Judge William Fahy denied the state’s detention request for Malik Williams, 23, and instead decided to send Williams home with an overnight curfew.

Chicago police were on patrol when they saw Williams open fire on the car with a black rifle near 5800 South Aberdeen around 9 p.m. on Sept. 14, according to the charges. The officers immediately activated their emergency equipment to pull Williams over.

Williams fled from his Infiniti Q50 with the gun in his hand, according to a CPD report and the state’s detention request. Both documents said he ignored officers’ commands and threw the gun as he continued to run.

Officers arrested him nearby after he fell, and they also found the Stribog SP9A1 Grand Power firearm he had dumped, according to the police report.

In their detention request, prosecutors told Judge Fahy that the firearm had been reported stolen, adding that CPD later found a gunshot victim who told officers she had been shot near 58th and Aberdeen.

Williams is not charged with shooting the woman. However, he is charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm in the direction of an occupied vehicle and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Our coverage area has since expanded to Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown and other North Side areas.
