CHICAGO – Murder charges have been filed in connection with the fatal shooting of a man on a Lincoln Park sidewalk last week. John Conway, 35, will appear for a detention hearing later today at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse at 26th and California.

Alexander Nesteruk, 34, of Wheaton, was shot in the chest last Wednesday, Nov. 27, around 3:58 p.m., in the 2400 block of North Clark, officials said. He died Monday afternoon, becoming the first person killed in Lincoln Park since October 2022.

About a quarter-mile from the scene of the shooting, in the 2600 block of North Lakeview, Chicago police investigators executed a search warrant at Conway’s high-rise home Thursday shortly before 7 p.m.

Detectives released surveillance images of a suspect Tuesday evening and asked the public for help identifying him. As of Wednesday evening, Conway was in custody.

A CWBChicago reader who saw the suspicious photos recognized the man as someone who works out at his gym near Lincoln and Fullerton.

“That guy is a weirdo,” said the reader. “Always stays true to himself. Always black clothes. Takes his gym bag on the floor.”

More details about what exactly police and prosecutors believe happened on Clark Street last week will be revealed at Conway’s hearing.

The local councilor said last week that Nesteruk “exhibited erratic and dangerous behavior at the time of the shooting and was aggressive with the perpetrator before the incident.” Witnesses told police that Nesteruk got in people’s faces.

CWBChicago was founded in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had become discouraged by the inaccurate information presented during local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has since expanded to Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown and other North Side areas. But our mission remains unchanged: to provide original public safety reporting with better context and more detail than mainstream media. Our editorial email address is news@cwbchicago.com
