CHICAGO – A man was charged Monday morning with robbing an on-duty Chicago Fire Department ambulance crew. Jaylin Brewster, 20, will appear in court on Christmas Eve on charges of robbery and aggravated battery.
Paramedics assigned to Ambulance 24 went to the 7900 block of South Throop around 1:45 a.m. to handle a call about a person having difficulty breathing. Police said a man approached the ambulance team, suggested he had a gun, and confiscated their property.
After the robbery, the medics, ages 39 and 41, overpowered Brewster and held him until police arrived, CPD said. Brewster is also accused of assaulting police who took him into custody.
CPD said the paramedics suffered minor injuries during the altercation. No weapon was found, but police did recover some of the victims’ money.
Court records show Brewster pleaded guilty Jan. 24 to robbery and aggravated assault of a peace officer in exchange for two years of mental health probation.
