CHICAGO – A Waukegan man and a 16-year-old girl forcibly carjacked a couple after agreeing to take the victims’ car for a test drive through Facebook Marketplace, prosecutors say.

Judge Shauna Boliker arrested Fonocerio Edwards, 20, pending trial on two counts of vehicle hijacking.

According to Chicago police, a 38-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man met Edwards and the girl on December 23 in the 2800 block of West 63rd Street. The woman, who was trying to sell her blue 2011 Chevy Traverse on Facebook, allegedly agreed to meet Edwards there so he could inspect the vehicle.

But the encounter went sideways when Edwards pushed the woman out of the driver’s seat of the car and jumped behind the wheel, officials said Tuesday. According to prosecutors, the woman quickly grabbed the keys from the car’s ignition and began walking home. Along the way, she handed over the keys to the 32-year-old man who accompanied her at the meeting.

Edwards then struck the man in the head with an object, resulting in a laceration and the presence of “excessive blood,” prosecutors said in an arrest request.

Some time after the hijacking, but before he was arrested this week, police officers encountered the carjacked vehicle and their body camera footage showed Edwards driving the Chevy, according to a CPD report.

No other details are available about the 16-year-old girl or the exact role she played in the hijacking because she is a minor. She is also charged with two counts of vehicle hijacking, according to CPD.
