Man charged with four North Side burglaries after building manager saw him stealing packages

A quick call from a Lakeview building manager allowed police to arrest a suspected serial burglar, who is now accused of committing four burglaries on the North Side since January. Devin Ford, 26, of Uptown, is accused of a series of home burglaries.

The building manager called 911 around 1 p.m. on March 19 after seeing Ford stealing packages from two buildings he manages, one in the 500 block of West Addison Street and another in the 3500 block of North Pine Grove Avenue, according to a Chicago Police report.

Officers quickly arrived and saw Ford walking down Pine Grove Avenue with a suitcase. They stopped him nearby. Ford admitted to taking packages from at least one of the buildings, the report said, and an investigation revealed he had two screwdrivers and a crowbar.

CPD obtained video footage showing him using a pry tool to force open locked doors on both buildings.

Detectives later linked Ford to a Jan. 21 burglary at a residential building in the 800 block of West Diversey Parkway in which an e-bike valued at $2,300 was stolen, according to a CPD report. He is also accused of breaking into a residential building in the 500 block of West Fullerton Parkway on Feb. 20.

Prosecutors did not ask for custody, so Judge John Hock released Ford pending trial.
