CHICAGO — A suburban man has been jailed pending trial after prosecutors accused him of hitting another driver with a baseball bat during a traffic dispute in Logan Square last month.
The victim, 37, “suffered broken bones, a permanent disfigurement, and requires ongoing surgery,” Judge Ankur Srivastava said in issuing the detention order for 25-year-old Dylan Berrio.
Berrio, of Franklin Park, nearly crashed head-on into the victim’s car in the 2600 block of North Milwaukee around 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 19, prosecutors said. He allegedly got out of his car with a metal baseball bat to confront the other driver.
According to Srivastava’s detention order, Berrio entered the man’s vehicle and hit him ten times with the bat, behavior that was “so impulsive and violent” that he had to be held in jail.
While the victim initially refused medical attention, he later sought help and learned he suffered a broken nose and shattered cartilage in his nose, which would require surgery and result in permanent disfigurement, officials said.
The victim was in sufficient state of mind to call 911 and provide a description of the attacker and his license plate number. Chicago police discovered the license plate came back from a car Berrio was renting at the time of the attack. Prosecutors said a CPD surveillance camera placed just steps away from the incident corroborated the victim’s statements. The victim then identified Berrio in a photo lineup.
He is charged with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and aggravated battery in a public place.
CWBChicago was founded in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had become discouraged by the inaccurate information presented during local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has since expanded to Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown and other North Side areas.
