CHICAGO – Prosecutors say a man repeatedly pointed a gun at Chicago police officers as he tried to run from police – just six days after he “probation for first gun crime‘in another gun case.
The first probation program, which allows cases to be expunged upon successful completion, was previously only available to adults under the age of 21 who met the criteria. But Illinois lawmakers changed the law this yearmaking it available to all adults who meet the requirements.
Rakim Kendall, 31, received the first probation sentence for a weapons offense from Judge Tiana Blakely on September 10 after pleading guilty to having a gun in a car in suburban Lansing last year.
Just six days later, around 10:50 p.m., Chicago police officers tried to stop Kendall because he fit the description of a masked man carrying a gun outside some businesses in the 7100 block of South Jeffery, according to a CPD report.
Kendall ran from police and was promptly struck by an SUV, knocking him to the ground, according to the report. It said he got back up, pointed a gun at the officers and continued running with the gun in his hand.
Prosecutors told Judge Susana Ortiz that he pointed the gun at police several times with his finger on the trigger, according to an arrest warrant. The officers repeatedly told him to drop the gun, but he refused, prompting the officers to shoot him. They missed.
The detention warrant stated that when police caught up with Kendall in the 7100 block of South Cyril, it took five officers to subdue him with a Tazer. Officials said the officers’ body cameras recorded the chase and other events.
Kendall is charged with five counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of 100 to 500 grams of cannabis.
The CPD report said the firearm he was carrying had an extended magazine and noted he was carrying multiple baggies of suspected marijuana.
