CHICAGO – Prosecutors have charged a man with shooting an 11-year-old boy during a traffic dispute in Wicker Park two weeks ago. Jeston Harris, 27, will appear for a detention hearing at Leighton Criminal Courthouse on Christmas Eve.
The shooting happened in the 1400 block of North Western Avenue at 8:27 a.m. on Friday, December 13. Shortly after the incident, Chicago police said the boy was driving a vehicle when the driver, one of his grandparents, struck another car. causing minor damage. When the boy’s relative stepped outside to exchange information, the driver of the first car opened fire, CPD said.
A bullet hit the boy in his left hand. He was taken to Stroger Hospital and is in good condition.
More information about the shooting and investigation will be released during Harris’ court appearance. He is charged with aggravated battery by discharging a firearm and four counts of aggravated assault by discharging a firearm.
Five people have been shot in Wicker Park and Bucktown this year, up from eight in 2023 and 10 in 2022.
