Man shot 5 times took Uber to hospital, possibly shot during botched robbery of off-duty cop

CHICAGO – There’s a plot twist to report in the late-night attempted robbery of an off-duty Cook County jail official in the West Loop. The officer pulled out a gun and shot the robber and a second man as they ran, Chicago police said, adding that no injuries were reported.

But we’ve learned that a man with five gunshot wounds arrived at Rush Hospital in an Uber about 30 minutes after the shooting. Investigators were trying to determine if he was shot by the correctional officer.

Officials said the 24-year-old officer was walking in the 200 block of North Morgan when a masked robber exited a white Ford Expedition around 1:41 a.m. and demanded his property. Instead of complying, the officer pulled out his gun and started shooting. The robber and a second man, also masked, ran from the area, throwing away a gun as they ran through an alley in the 900 block of West Lake.

Shortly after 2 a.m., a 31-year-old man arrived at Rush Hospital in a ride-along seeking treatment for multiple gunshot wounds to his leg and torso, according to information we gathered. He said he was shot near Sangamon and Lake streets, just blocks from where the botched robbery took place.

The men left a stolen SUV, which somehow caught fire, at the scene. An officer on scene initially said they found 15 shell casings in the area, but that number increased to 23 shell casings as the investigation continued.

CWBChicago was founded in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had become discouraged by the inaccurate information presented during local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has since expanded to Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown and other North Side areas. But our mission remains unchanged: to provide original public safety reporting with better context and more detail than mainstream media. Our editorial email address is news@cwbchicago.com
