Man shot and seriously injured on CTA platform in the Loop

CHICAGO – Police are searching for a known suspect after a man was shot on a Green Line platform in the Loop on Christmas Eve.

A witness ran to officers working on an unrelated assignment around 9:39 a.m. to inform them of the shooting at the Clark-Lake station. Police found the victim, 45, moments later lying outside the station entrance on Lake Street.

The victim told police he thought a man had stolen something from him and the man started shooting when he confronted him about the suspected theft. Police are looking for a 43-year-old suspect, a black man who was last seen wearing a brown leather jacket with a gun in a small brown Louis Vuitton bag. Officers found shell casings on the train platform, which also serves the Brown, Orange, Pink and Purple Line trains.

In a brief media statement, Chicago police said the victim was in critical condition with three gunshot wounds at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

So far this year, fourteen people have been shot in the Loop, compared to sixteen people last year. While still high compared to long-term averages, downtown shootings are down from unprecedented numbers during the COVID pandemic. The neighborhood currently had 39 shooting victims in 2022 and 28 in 2021.
