A 60-year-old man who escaped from a federal prison camp in Englewood and lived on the run for five years was sentenced to 10 years in prison and must pay $9 million in restitution, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Allen Todd May pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud, one count of escape and one count of identity theft after he was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service in August 2023 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
May was a facilities clerk at the prison camp and drove vehicles on the grounds when he began a scheme to steal unclaimed oil and gas royalties, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado. He stole more than $700,000 in royalties between 2016 and December 2018, when he drove off the Englewood compound.
For the next five years, May netted $8 million through the same scheme to support an “extravagant lifestyle” and stole the identities of inmates serving long prison sentences, posing as them to keep up the ruse, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
May’s new prison sentence will be served after he finishes the seven years left on his sentence when he escaped.
