A man who freely admits that he shot and killed another man in Rogers Park, has been sentenced to four years in prison for illegally possessing the firearm he used in the shooting.
Prosecutors have never charged Kamari Robinson, of killing the 30-year-old Kenneth Sandy because they believed that he was acting in self-defense. But they accused the triple convicted criminal by illegally possessing a firearm.
Around 2 p.m. on November 16, 2023, Sandy and Robinson had a fight in the 1600 block of West Howard, steps of the Howard CTA station, said officials. The argument became physically and Robinson reportedly shot Sandy Dead when a nearby security camera recorded the incident.
When the Chicago police arrived, Robinson walked to an officer and admitted that he shot Sandy, but claimed that it was in self -defense, according to his arrest report. He reportedly said officers that he gave the gun to his sister after the shooting.
Sandy died less than 30 minutes later. The police said he had sustained two shot wounds on the left side of his chest and another on his arm. In the report, an officer noted that prosecutors “rejected” “because of self -defense.” Robinson is only accused of illegal use of a weapon by a criminal.
Robinson has now found guilty of a criminal in possession of a firearm. Judge Aleksandra Gillespie gave him the prison sentence of four years, of which he must serve 50%. His sentence will be reduced by 530 days for the time he spent with wearing a single monitor since he was arrested.
Public data shows that Robinson’s earlier crime judgments were for aggravated battery, hate crime and the possession of a regulated substance, all in 2017.
