A Venezuelan migrant has been sentenced to a three-year prison for robbing a woman near the Clybourn-Gang in September. But this because this is Illinois, he will actually be out of prison for less than a year after the crime has taken place.
Anthony Laya-Alvarado, also known as Elvis Laya, argued guilty of theft in exchange for the sentence of judge Anjana Hansen, according to court reports.
Laya-Alvarado focused on a 37-year-old Streeterville woman who ran around 10:50 am in the 900 block of West Weed on September 21, the prosecutors said. He grabbed her chain and jumped on a motorized bike that another man operated.
A police officer in Chicago, aware that the theft perpetrators both rode on the same motorized bicycle, tried to hold Laya-Alvarado and another man while riding a motorized bicycle near Marcy Court and Cortland around 11 am, said a CPD report.
Both men withdrew from the officer and the driver managed to escape. But they caught Laya-Alvarado, who had the yellow chain of the woman with a “r” pendant.
The robbery was one of the at least seven comparable crimes that took place within a few days, mainly in the loop and on the lake.
According to the law, the punishment of Laya-Alvarado will be reduced by 50% for good behavior. The remaining year and a half will be compensated by 393 days of credit that Laya-Alvarado earned by being in prison and participating in programs awaiting the process. According to the Illinois Department of Corrections, it is planned on September 19, two days before the first birthday of the robbery.
