New York City has officially launched a guaranteed income pilot program to test whether cash benefits can help people achieve self-sufficiency and stability.
The $1.5 million initiative provides monthly no-obligation payments of $1,200 to young adults ages 18 to 24 who have struggled with homelessness.
In addition to the monthly payments, participants can also choose when they want to receive a one-off amount of € 5,000.
The program is currently being piloted with 60 people, and local news channel The City spoke to several participants about their first views of the initiative.
A 22-year-old anonymous participant living in a shelter in the Bronx say the money gives her the flexibility to learn new skills.
She also hopes the money will help her rent an apartment.
“I’ve been in the shelter for so long, it’s a little depressing sometimes. Because I’m like, ‘Okay, when are they going to contact me about this apartment?’
Now, with this money, my sister and I say, “Okay, it might be easier to get that apartment ourselves.”
The program is funded by the City Council in partnership with the nonprofit Covenant House New York and will run from December to June 2026.
