Huge shrinkage.
That’s the bleak forecast for New York’s population if trends continue, a shocking new study warns.
If Albany cannot rein in its progressive misgovernance, the state will soon be a shadow of its former self.
Researchers at Cornell University predict a possible decline 2 million people – or more! – over the next 25 years, reducing the total from 19.7 million to less than 17 million.
The researchers cite the inability of enough newcomers to compensate for lower birth rates and deaths: “Domestic migration flows are the largest driver of population change in New York.”
The consequences for the state are grim:
* A loss of seats in Congress, meaning less influence on federal policies affecting New York.
* Less federal funding based on population.
* A blow to companies and jobs.
* Declining tax revenues for the city and state.
And all this follows a steady net out-migration that has plagued the state decades.
Consider that in the 1940s, New York’s share of the national population translated into 45 seats in the House of Representatives; today there are only 26 – with a good chance of dropping to 23 after the 2030 census.
During COVID, from April 2020 to July 2022, New York City alone almost lost half a million people, or 5.3% of residents, reports Comptroller Tom DiNapoli.
Some have returned, but others have disappeared forever.
Meanwhile, Florida and Texas grew during that time, as did the nation as a whole.
Why is New York losing ground?
Simple: Progressives keep raising taxes and allowing crime and lawlessness to run rampant.
Public schools here are failing to teach children what they need to know.
On Thursday, Governor Hochul announced plans to revive congestion pricing – a regressive, billionsdollar tax for motorists in Midtown Manhattan.
That follows a $1.1 billion tax increase a few years ago and $4 billion in 2021.
Meanwhile, crimes remain about a third higher than before the pandemic.
Vast amounts of drugs cover the streets.
Migrant criminals walk free.
And while New York spends far more per student than any other state, only about half of children in third through eighth grades were considered “proficient” on standardized tests, according to data released were released on Thursday.
The progressive agenda is clearly a repellent.
If not tamed soon, it could mean the death of New York.
