A historic musical journey begins
This June, the iconic New York Philharmonic (NY Phil) prepares for a historic event. They will be the first all-American orchestra to tour mainland China since the global pause caused by COVID-19. From June 27 to July 7, 2024, the NY Phil will visit Guangzhou, Nanjing and Shanghai. This is not just a tour; it is a bridge that reconnects cultural ties through the universal language of music.
The musical line-up
The orchestra plans to enchant the audience with masterpieces by Brahms, Copland and Mozart. These performances will not only showcase the rich heritage of Western classical music, but also showcase the talents of the NY Phil musicians led by Jaap van Zweden, their esteemed conductor.
Adding a contemporary touch, the tour includes the Chinese premiere of Nina Shekhar’s “Lumina.” This piece, known for its lively and captivating melody, promises to be a highlight. The program also includes selections from Mahler’s “Des Knaben Wunderhorn”, with the world-famous baritone Thomas Hampson.
Educational assistance
An important aspect of the NY Phil visit involves educational activities. In collaboration with the Shanghai Orchestral Academy, NY Phil musicians will connect directly with students. They will give master classes, offer lessons and even participate in a side-by-side rehearsal. This collaboration culminates in a joint celebration concert on July 7, symbolizing the unity and shared knowledge between the two cultures.
