The race between AI Giants has completely shifted. OpenAi, the company that has largely put the agenda in artificial intelligence in recent years, is now in a high-effort race to defend its territory and conquer new boundaries, in particular AI-driven coding. The race to dominate AI-assisted coding is not really about technology, although the technology of windsurf is impressive. It is more about recording the developer’s workflow, which quickly becomes the most monetizable aspect of the current LLM technology. Coders use these tools from the coding agent – cursor, windsurf and the like – to write code, sit there for hours a day and to build real code that can be implemented. This is probably much more valuable than incidental consumer interactions.
And it is where windsurf comes into the picture. The question for Enterprise leaders is what this “agentic starting point” will look like. Will it be a single, dominant interface, or a more open garden of specialized agents embedded in various applications, and accessible from thousands of different places, from Salesforce for CRM, Meta for Social Media and a large number of other developer platforms?

- The evolving OpenAI-Microsoft relationship: The movement from Microsoft to an “open garden” and support for cross-platform agent protocols (such as A2A) means that companies trust in the Azure ecosystem have more choices, but also have to navigate in a more complex landscape, since OpenAI finds other distribution points such as Windsurf.
- The rise of agentic development: The transition from AI-assisted coding to real agentic development environments takes place. Leaders must prepare their teams for tools that offer Multi-Step reasoning, project-wide context consciousness and autonomous task performance. This requires the promotion of skills in rapid engineering, agent orchestation and understanding the possibilities and limitations of these new systems.
- Embrace the sandbox: As AI tools become more powerful and democratized, it is crucial to offer safe and ruled sandbox environments for experiments. This enables teams to explore the potential of Agentic AI to build custom solutions and to stimulate innovation without jeopardizing company data or systems. This sandbox can soon contain the interface that the OpenAi-Windsurf duo will eventually consider (assuming that their deal is going through), the range of Google and dozens of others.
