Passengers detain gunman after shooting aboard Red Line train in Edgewater

UPDATE: CPD has released a statement saying a 33-year-old man was shot by a 23-year-old woman while on the train. The woman spat at the man and started an argument before shooting the gun once, police said. He was shot in the left shoulder and is listed in fair condition at St. Francis Hospital. CPD confirmed the shooter is in custody and a weapon has been recovered.

CHICAGO – A CTA passenger was shot while on a Red Line train in Edgewater Wednesday morning, according to local Councilwoman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth. She said police arrested a suspect and recovered a firearm.

Police records show that the CTA notified the CPD of a shooting on a northbound train between Bryn Mawr and Thorndale around 8:48 a.m. Officers reported that people had left the train and were walking on the elevated tracks while the third rail was still electrified.

It took almost 20 minutes for first responders to locate the victim because several trains were stopped on the tracks. A Loyola University police officer was the first to locate the victim, who was on a train that stopped near the Thorndale station. Manaa-Hoppenworth said the victim is an adult, and police believe the shooting happened when the train was near Ardmore.

A source said passengers on the train caught the gunman and held him until police arrived.

CPD has not released any information about the situation. The CPD advised area schools to implement soft lockdowns while securing the area.
