Rape rates are up 13% in New York, police say

According to the NYPD, rape rates are on the rise in the Big Apple, up 13% so far this year compared to last year.

Reports of the crime rose to 1,218 through September 22, compared to 1,077 incidents during the same period last year, NYPD data shows.

The number of rapes has risen by 27% in the past 28 days, from 124 in the same period in 2023 to 157, the statistics show.

Most other violent crimes are down, including murder, which is down 10% so far this year from 302 to 271; as well as the number of shooting victims, which fell 5% from 870 to 830, the data shows.

So far this year, rape arrests are up 2% from last year, but down 26% from the same point five years ago.
