Through its tireless research and advocacy for the protection of the oceans of the world, Cristina Mittermeier has emerged as one of the most prominent nature conservation photographers. Together with Paul Nicklen, she was co-founder of Sealegacy to concentrate on the impact of communication through art and science, with critical issues such as endangered biodiversity and climate crisis. She also founded the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP), a professional community -oriented environmental issues.
Recognizing the negative and potentially disastrous effects of indifference, skepticism and inactivity, Mittermeier states that one thing remains just as important as always. “Hope may not be a plan or a strategy, but it is vital to survive for us,” she says in an introductory note for her new book. “I reject wild apathy, cynicism and fear, and with tenacity and determination I choose kindness and hope.”

Published by Hemeria, HEAP is organized in six chapters that emphasize the countless ways in which humanity and nature are fundamentally intertwined. The first, ‘indigenous wisdom’, contains the knowledge and traditions of communities that use ancient ways to make contact with the earth. Extra chapters focus on the oceans, Arctic rich, the hereafter, future generations and how all these elements are intertwined. During the whole daring photos of Mittermeier of Dieren in the wild, remarkable landscapes, tribal rituals and family ties serve as memories of incredible beauty, resilience and determination.
Mittermeier travels around the world, visits external communities, attends important ceremonial events and documents fragile ecosystems. “Images can help us understand the urgency that many photographers feel to protect wild places,” she says in a statement. She continues:
My work is about building a greater consciousness of the responsibility of what it means to be human. It is about understanding that the history of every living creature that once existed on this planet also lives in us. It is about the ethical imperative – the urgent memory that we are linked to all other species on this planet and that we have a duty to act as preservators of our colleague -lifestyle forms.
