A tough Republican Officer of Republican crime uses his years of persecution of some of the most notorious cases in Colorado to combat crime about the blue state.
In January George Brauchler became the very first public prosecutor for the 23rd judicial district of Colorado, which made it the first time in more than 60 years that Colorado added a new judicial district.
He previously served as DA for the 18th judicial district, where he continued some of the largest mass shooting issues in the state, including on an Aurora cinema and Columbine High School.
“I was a very young public prosecutor when Columbine happened, and Columbine was high school right south of where I graduated from high school,” said Brauchler Fox News Digital during an interview. “And so, when it took place to prosecute the crimes from it, I thought that at the time the biggest, worst case I would ever handle, and I was wrong and that is an amazing revelation to come to this job.”
Shortly after Brauchler was chosen in a “wider version” of his current jurisdiction, the Aurora Theater Shooting Case happened.
“A man walked into a cinema in Alameda at about 2:25 and tried to kill a theater full of people, and I continued that. We also have a massive shooting here at a school at a school at the end of my time. Simply, you are there. You always say yes,” explained Brauchler while thinking about his previous career.
“You eventually develop skills and an expertise. And then you are in a position to run for the first new public prosecutor in more than 60 years in Colorado. And you think, for whatever it is worthy, so humble if I can say this, there is just no one who is bringing this job at the moment the kind of experience I have for my community.”
Last month, Brauchler insured a rare murder judgment in the first degree in a high-profile Dui case, which marked the first murder process in the newly formed 23rd judicial district of Colorado.
The case concerned Paul Stephenson, 57, who said Brauchler that he drank a bottle of fireball and two beers before he poured a minibus that was parked in Castle Rock in August.
“That case was so disturbing to me at many levels,” said Brauchler.
Lt. Colonel Matthew Anderson, a 39-year-old pilot of the Air Force Test and Father of four, was killed while pumping gas. His wife was in the gas station store at the time of the crash. One of their children suffered from a broken skull and two others were also injured.
“On a Sunday afternoon, the filling of his car with gas while his wife is going to get the children’s codes, poured some two -time convicted drunk in a lifted Chevy Silverado, crosses five lanes of traffic, hops a curb, the accelerator to 98% and crushes that car at 45 miles of the children and the kids of the children of those those people The horrible scene cherishes, which cherishes the horrible scene, which has received the horrible scene, which loses the horrible scene.
“In Colorado, the intestinal reaction costs, oh, that is murder of vehicles. And that sounds terrible, but in Colorado we have some of the weakest traffic laws in the country. So vehicles [homicide] would only have been punishable for a maximum of 12 years in the Department of Corrections. Given our broken conviction schedule, that guy would have been released in probably less than four years, and that seemed completely unacceptable to me and everyone who looked at this case, “Brauchler continued.
To ensure that justice was served, Brauchler said that his office received a “small aggressive” and accused the driver of murder in the first degree based on “extreme indifference”.
“We pursued it. And I am not going to tell you that it had no risks. I am not going to tell you that I did not have a well in my stomach. But in about three and a half -hour consultation after about a week of a week, the jury came back and said,” Yes, guilty of murder in the first degree, “and we are all pretty satisfied with that outcome,” Bauchler said.
Brauchler added what this case also emphasized was that he has the feeling that we have lost sight of the purpose of the criminal justice system and removed our eye from the ball on daily crimes, “like Duik.
“One thing about this is that there is no time of the day, no way you can ride that you can say:” Well, I am safe for drunken drivers on this road at the moment. ” My God, this was on a road in the middle of Castle Rock, not a highway, on a road, but across the Douglas County Fair.
Brauchler said that Anderson’s wife and children have recovered, but the wrinkle effects of witnesses of the horrible scene are “still unknown about how far they stretch”.
“How does seeing their father’s violent death see for them, the way they saw him lying in the parking lot with a huge main injury and missing his leg above the ankle, how chases the rest of their lives? I don’t think anyone knows,” said Brauchler.
“I have often spoken with the widow. She is resilient and cool, but you can also see that something is missing in her eyes. I don’t know how to describe it, but I have seen it a lot with losses like this and the blue flame that flashes there is a bit more to see.
Tom Mustin, director of media relationships for Brauchler’s office, told Fox News Digital that “usually DIO DuIstaken lead to killing taxes on vehicles, but this case was a new precedent and reflects the difficult approach to Da Brauchler who helped him win the office.”
“I do not avoid the description of the description of the crime,” but when it simply maintained the law and the expectation that there would be responsibility to break it, it will be “heavy [crime]”” Said Brauchler. ” That just tells you how far we have shifted from the idea of personal responsibility for criminal behavior. But I am proud of the position we have taken. It is well received everywhere. And I do not only mean in our jurisdiction, but when I go to other areas of law. “
Brauchler, a Republican DA in the heavy blue Denver Metro area, said that Colorado “has taken such a sharp turn to the progressive links that every other office is now being dominated by Democrats”, which makes its position unique.
“I will tell you one thing that strikes me, that is strange is that I have made a real point to tell the audience, even before I have arrived, we become an office that stands for the rule of law, and that if people come here to steal from us or be too victims, they expect them to be expecting,” said Brauchler. “That message was received so overwhelming and in a positive way, as people clap when I say so.”
Brauchler added that when he started working in his field 30 years ago and had the same messages, it would have been a ‘yawning party’.
“People would have been like:” Duh, that’s what prosecutors do and police do. ” But that is how far we have shifted in the other direction, “said Brauchler.
Asked for other high -profile matters such as the case of the brothers of Menendez in California, Brauchler said: “There is no good message that comes from these two that once walk out of prison.”
“I remember these cases and I followed them like everyone else,” said Brauchler. “But this was a brutal, planned murder for the most selfish reasons that are possible. Everything they are currently coming up with, as an excuse, was already dried and rejected before the jury when they were convicted.
Brauchler said that what is worrying about the case of the brothers of the Menendez who is being brought back is that “every time something like that happens and someone sees a quantity of success, it encourages others to do this.”
“You have to believe that there are a number of defense lawyers who are willing to shoot for the familiarity or the salary. To try to catch something like that, I do not deny them. I know that is things, but the answer should be that we have to forget the Menendez brothers.”
Brauchler said that the case of Menendez’s brothers is emphasized, something that happened since the shooting in the Aurora theater that strengthens murderers.
“There was a real joint effort made by decent people and many in the media to no longer strengthen the murderers; like, we must be aimed at the victims. I would say that since the Aurora Theater Shooter I said that the name of that guy lasted perhaps through the entire test, which lasted from January 20, 2015.
“And so here we are again focused on the brothers Mendez and the Netflix things about the Menendez brothers. And I understand that, but we really have to de-welder and focus more on the victims and the crime that was committed. And I think if you let these guys out, you do the opposite.”
Brauchler added that there are now even studies about the correlation between the amount of fame that a criminal becomes and then copycat-type crimes.
“I’ll Give You An Example With Columbine. The Voice School Mass Shooting That I Covered, Both Of Those Shooters Had Passing Fascination With Those Columbine Shooters. We had a near-Mass Shooting at Another High School Right Down A Fascination High Shallination A Fascination High Theythination A Fascination High They They Bothum. Aurora Theater Shooter Hey Left His Apartment Back to Go Murder These people?
“I get it, we have to report the bad guy or bad girl at least once,” Brauchler continued. “Then, let’s not talk about it anymore. Let’s talk about the crime. Let’s talk about the victims and let’s go to court.”
