Rogue Tow Truck Driver steals vehicles from crash scenes in South Loop

Chicago – A rogue tow car operator steals cars from drivers involved in traffic accidents in the South Loop, according to a new Chicago police warning. Vehicles have been stolen at least twice in the last three weeks from crash scenes.

CPD said that both victims were involved in traffic accidents when the thief appeared with his tow truck and their vehicles without permission. The towing driver, who operated under a fake company name, took the cars to unknown locations.

One victim was the target after crashing in the 1900 block of South Lake Shore Drive around midnight on 26 February. The other had stolen their car after an accident in the 1800 block of South Clark at 7:40 am on March 8.

The CPD warning only described the towing driver as a man between 25 and 30 years old.

The police warns drivers to prevent unsolicited pipes and to be wary of “Chaser” trucks that appear on crash scenes. The Department also recommends contacting your insurance company before hiring a towing or road assistant. Moreover, CPD said drivers should

  • not admit to high -pressure tactics
  • Check and verify the municipal license number of a sleep operator
  • Hold a copy of their board and vehicle identification number in a safe place so that they have it at hand when their car is stolen.

Anyone with information about the dragging scam can contact three detectives on 312-744-8263 with regard to crime pattern #25-3-018.

CWBCHICAGO was founded in 2013 by five residents of Wigleyville and Boystown who had been discouraged with inaccurate information that was provided during meetings of the local community policing (CAPS). Our coverage area has since been expanded to cover Lincoln Park, River North, De Loop, Uptown and other North Side areas.
