A gang of armed thieves in a stolen car shot shot with a contractor who caught them at his working vehicle in West Rogers Park early on Monday morning.
The Chicago police suspect that the brutal robbery is part of a growing wave of thefts that focus on construction workers and contractors throughout the city.
The robbery unfolded around 5:46 am in the 6800 block of North Seeley when the employee saw three men’s pill atmosphere tools from his work vehicle, according to a Chicago police report.
When the crooks noticed the man, at least one gun took off and shot shot in his direction, a spokesperson for CPD said. No one was hurt by the gunfire.
The robbers, dressed in dark clothing with face masks, corresponded to the description of crews involved in at least a dozen similar crimes in the past month.
Video showed them fleeing in a black infiniti, who may have recovered the police shortly after crime. Witnesses told agents that they saw four men throw the stolen infiniti and jump into another escape car.
The crew was described as black males in their midst to late teenage years, with ski masks and dark clothing- except for the shooter, which, according to a witness, wore a blue hoodie.
Last week a video on social media showed a crew of masked and armed thieves that focus on a work car in Portage Park. And the week before, CWBCHICAGO reported on two robberies of construction teams, one in Lincoln Park and the other on Logan Square. Victims were robbed in both incidents.
CPD has also issued a series of community warnings about similar robberies on work sites.
