In recent months, Samsung has rightly been accused of a lack of innovation in his mobile division. The recent phones from Galaxy S25 series are remarkably similar to their predecessors, while the latest Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6 only offered small updates.
However, there can be little doubt about what the company is really capable of, especially when it comes to screens. At MWC 2025 in Barcelona, Samsung’s Display group showed a number of weird and beautiful display concepts that make me very enthusiastic for the future.
Although I was not allowed to go hands-on with one of these, there is still enough to talk about.
A Nintendo Switch -Rival that folds?
Handheld consoles make AAA gaming on the road realistic, but they are not exactly subtle. Not everyone wants to drag such a huge device to get their gaming fix, but most mobile games do not offer the same experience.

Simply folding the device in two would make a big difference for portability. In the imagined example of Samsung, the display folds horizontally, ranked with the joysticks and D-Pad so that they can properly put together.
It is not clear how noticeable the fold would be, but unlike a telephone, you don’t have to touch the screen that often. As long as it has no influence on visibility, this seems an ideal solution for portable gaming.
The short case of a folding display
LG brought the idea of a screen to life with the Stanbyme in 2023 in a suitcase. But with a 27-inch display it is huge and cannot easily be taken everywhere with you.
On paper, the flexible suitcase from Samsung is a much better solution. In contrast to LG, the display folds and unfolds when you open and close it, which means that you can fit twice as much screen within the same footprint.

I saw that this was a perfect solution for a camping or walking trip, so that everyone could watch films on a large screen instead of being bound by a phone or tablet.
Tour of A-Claws
The other most interesting concept concerns Flipphones.
It shows a Galaxy Z Flip-style device that closes via two hinges-one at the top and one at the bottom. Instead of the current Flip telephone model of a normal phone that folds vertically in two, you could have a larger display.
Unfortunately I did not see this for myself, because it was removed from the demo area by the time I arrived. But it seems deeply defective, with part of the display still visible and therefore permanently exposed to the elements. I don’t see it for long scratching or avoiding other damage.
Nevertheless, new approaches of Flipphones are welcome. In contrast to the form factors in book style, we do not yet have to see a company deviating from the traditional vertical folding model.
However, I cannot see this concept that it takes off.
