CHICAGO – A second man has been charged in connection with the attempted robbery of an off-duty prison employee that culminated in a shootout in the West Loop last month. And like his alleged accomplice, Romeo Holloway was on parole at the time of the crime.
Prosecutors say Holloway, 26, and Desmond White, 32, confronted a 23-year-old off-duty Cook County jail officer in the 200 block of North Morgan on Oct. 13 around 1:41 a.m. They allegedly demanded his watch and other valuables. at gunpoint.
According to the charges, the victim identified himself as a peace officer before both Holloway and White fired shots at him.
The officer drew his weapon and opened fire on the robbers as they fled the scene. White showed up at Rush Hospital in an Uber about 30 minutes later with multiple gunshot wounds. Prosecutors charged him last month.
Judge Susana Ortiz arrested Holloway during a hearing this weekend. In her warrant, Ortiz said Holloway, who was serving as the getaway driver, shot at the officer as he ran and got out of their vehicle. Holloway admitted to being present and firing a gun, according to the judge’s order.
He is charged with attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer, attempted armed robbery and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.
Holloway was released from prison on May 20 after serving about half of the two-year sentence he received for possessing a firearm with a defaced serial number.
White had been on parole since December after serving half of the four-year sentence he received for being a felon in possession of a weapon or body armor and forgery, according to Illinois Department of Corrections records.
He was one of several people accused in 2022 of using forged work documents to get permission to travel around the city for jobs they did not have while under electronic monitoring for pending crimes. Former City Colleges of Chicago basketball coach Edmond Pryor operated the counterfeiting plant.
