Snapchat announced on Wednesday that Snap Map now has more than 400 million monthly active users, a new milestone for one of the core functions of the app.
Snap Map was launched in 2017 and was originally a way for users to see the locations of their friends and to browse public snaps from all over the world. Over time, the position has evolved and now offers ways for users to discover local hotspots and find things to do.
The success of Snap Map is important for Snapchat, because it is a crucial part of the social network and it gives a competitive advantage over rivals such as Instagram and Tiktok, both of which offer a real -time social discovery in the way Snap Map makes.
Instagram is aware of this, because the meta-owned social network is spotted on a “friends card” with which users can see the locations of their friends in real time.
“Snap Map is one of the most used mobile maps in the world, and we are very happy to see that our community continues to grow,” said Ceci Mourkogiannis, VP of Product at Snap, in a statement to Techcrunch. “The Snap card helps hundreds of millions connect with friends and their favorite places and discover what is happening around them, making the world feel more connected every day.”
The news is because Snapchat Snap Map has updated with extra functionality over the years. Last year the company launched a “footsteps” function with which you can see how much of the world you have explored and follow where you traveled.
In addition, Snapchat has rolled out “promoted places” on Snap card as a way for users to discover new places. For brands, Promeded Places offers the possibility to advertise and present all their locations on Snap card.
