In Oviedo, Spain, a 6,000-square-foot installation of metal emergency blankets is transforming a former weapons factory this month. “Dekens 2” comes from a Spanish artist Spy‘s ongoing series of monumental kinetic works (formerly).
The natural light from the first floor windows and the building’s giant clerestory reflects off the folds of hundreds of blankets, glittering gold on one side and silver on the other. The reflection, documented with water on the floor, echoes the hanging arrangement, creating a sense of depth and further openness.
Centering the dialogue between location and theme in ‘Blankets 2’, the artist draws attention to the building’s history as a weapons manufacturer by filling it with objects conversely intended for medical treatment and care.
