A stranger jumped behind the wheel of an SUV that a woman let in Brooklyn on Friday morning with her 2-year-old son and the total was saved within 10 minutes when the police persuaded the Joyrider, the authorities said.
The 32-year-old mother called 911 and told agents that she let her Nissan Pathfinder walk with the toddler in the back seat while she stepped in a Deli Avenue near Van Sinderen Avenue in Brownsville, the police said.
While she was in the store, 34-year-old Maurice Stephens stepped behind the wheel and drove away with the toddler, the police said.
The alleged Carjacker almost rode a mile when officers saw him in Wyona Street and Liberty Avenue and pulled him around 10:50 am, the authorities said.
The boy was safely restored and Stephens – who has no relationship with the family – was placed in cuffs, the authorities said.
Stephens, from Brooklyn Heights, was accused of the fourth degree Grand Larceny, second -degree kidnapping, criminal possession of stolen ownership and endangering the well -being of a child, Cops said.
He has one earlier arrest, for criminal possession of a regulated substance from January in Midtown Manhattan, the authorities said.
