A posse of lively beings who cleverly harden their environment in prints by Jo Pearson, also known as Jo Pearson, Strangford. From pigeons and rabbits to alligators and fish, the most recent creations of the artist are expanding her earlier works with playful animals.
In the past year, Strangford gradually shifted her practice to cutting wood, in contrast with its earlier techniques that were largely focused on linoleum. “It may seem like a small change, but it makes a big difference for the character and texture of the print,” the artist explains. “The more handmade the finished print looks, the happier I am.”
While Strangford refines her wood blocking skills, she also investigates the possibilities of printing reduction, which refers to gradually cutting more material from the same block after using it to print initial layers. This is one of the ways in which she can achieve such detailed expressions and more complex patterns.
Strangford’s work can currently be seen for the Lino Print 4 Exhibition in the UK follows The Instagram of the artist for peeks to her process and view her website for prints.
