Visual arts residencies at Banff Center offer dedicated time, spacious studios, and thoughtful mentorship for project-based studio practices. Participants are guided by experienced teachers through research, experimentation and peer-engaged learning.
Visual Arts Thematic – On other archives
Registration deadline: May 6, 2026
Program dates: November 2 – December 4, 2026
Working with institutional, personal, fictional and/or speculative archives, participants are invited to think critically about the archive as a method or ‘technology’ for retelling social and cultural stories. Themes may include, but are not limited to, familial/ancestral lineages and cultural inheritance, oral histories, micro-histories, absence, amnesia, and memory. Participants will engage in stimulating discussions and mentorship by leading educators, artists Deanna Bowen And Krista Belle Stewart And curator Tarah High.
Visual Arts Thematic – Future figurations
Registration deadline: June 3, 2026
Program dates: January 25 – February 26, 2027
Drawing on ideas of speculative futures, science fiction, myth-making and world-building, artists are invited to explore, imagine and create possible personalities and possible worlds, exploring concepts of embodied futures.
This program is led by the artist faculty Rajni Perera And Marigold Santosthe concept of the future is considered an anti-oppressive and restorative force of hope and possibility. By decolonizing ideas about the body as defined by Eurocentric and heteronormative conditions, new possibilities of selfhood, agency, and self-reclamation are considered.
