Telegram Shuts Down ‘Largest Illicit Online Marketplace’ After Elliptic’s Insights

Telegram has closed the illegal Haowang guarantee from Marketplace, formerly Huione Guarantee, which has facilitated transactions since 2021 of a total of more than $ 27 billion in Stablecoins.

Haowang was concluded on the basis of insights provided by Blockchain analysis company Elliptic on Tuesday.

The closure took place in the midst of a performance against thousands of suspected Chinese crypto crime channels that are active on Telegram, after the report from Elliptic in Marketplace Xinbi warranty.

Telegram has now closed both Huione and Xinbi, which processed a combined $ 35 billion in illegal transactions in Stablecoins, Elliptic wrote in a web post on Wednesday.

“Our analysis indicates that Huione Guarantee has facilitated transactions from a total of more than $ 27 billion since the launch in 2021, making it the largest illegal online marketplace that ever operated,” Elliptic wrote.

Xinbi was the second largest, with transactions with a value of $ 8.4 billion since 2022, Elliptic added.

For perspective, remarkable “dark web” market places such as the Silk Road and Alphabay processed $ 216 million and $ 639 million respectively.

Such market places were operated historically via the anonymous browser Tor, but more recently moved their activities to Telegram, the Messages app with more than a billion users.

Huione and Xinbi are referred to as “warranty” marketplaces, a term designated for platforms that do not sell goods and services themselves, but offer a location for traders to sell to customers.
