A man shot a 62-year-old woman during a domestic dispute and then shot a Chicago Police SWAT officer who responded to the scene in Albany Park on Monday while a police dispatcher monitored the standoff via an open phone line. He is now in custody.
Shortly before 11 a.m., officers responded to a report of a person shot in the 4600 block of North Springfield Avenue and found a 62-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the face. She was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she was listed in critical condition, according to police.
Police soon learned that the gunman had barricaded himself in a nearby home with a 13-year-old girl and his 42-year-old girlfriend, according to an officer who responded to the scene. The injured woman is believed to be the friend’s mother, an officer said.
For more than an hour, a Chicago 911 calltaker monitored activity in the apartment via an open 911 phone line, relaying what they heard to officers on the scene. At one point, the armed man was heard telling his hostages to find him a bullet as he expected police to come through the door. The dispatcher also reported hearing a woman crying and saying she was bleeding heavily. At one point, the dispatcher heard one of the hostages beg the gunman not to shoot through the door and beg him to put down his gun.
“You guys gotta be careful,” a dispatcher warned the officers over their radios. “She begs him not to shoot through the door.”
About 11:44 a.m., as a Chicago Police SWAT team tried to force their way through the front door, the gunman fired at least one shot through the door, hitting a 45-year-old SWAT officer in the abdomen, according to CPD Interim Supt. Fred Waller.
The officer, a 20-year veteran of the force, was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where he underwent surgery. His condition has stabilized, Waller said.
The standoff continued as the suspect briefly turned on the apartment’s natural gas and continued to point his weapon at the hostages, according to the dispatcher monitoring the open phone line. Shortly after noon the man started talking about surrendering. About an hour later he surrendered himself and released both hostages.
The 42-year-old woman and 13-year-old girl were taken to Stroger Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Charges are now pending against the shooter.

CHICAGO – On July 20, 2026, at approximately 10:56 a.m., Chicago Police Department officers assigned to the 17th (Albany Park) District responded to a call of a person shot. Upon arrival, officers located a 67-year-old female victim who had been shot. She was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition. After shooting the victim, who is believed to be a domestic character, the perpetrator held two people at gunpoint in his home. SWAT officers arrived on scene. An officer assigned to SWAT was shot in the abdomen after responding to this incident. He was taken to a local hospital where he underwent surgery and was stabilized. The SWAT incident ended and the armed perpetrator was taken into custody. The two hostages in the home were taken to hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. A weapon was found at the scene.
The Investigative Response Team is investigating the circumstances of the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
