Critics of what some describe as an overinrardag may have to re-evaluate their claims in the light of updated data based on a publication of January 2025 of the Statistics of the Bureau of Justice from the US Department of Justice.

That gives the impression that the average time spent on prisons in the state is astronomical. It is not.
According to the US Department of Justice, the median time in prison is 1.3 years for all violations. The mathematical average for all violations is 2.7 years.

What is meant by Median Time served?
Median time served means that 50 percent of prisoners are more time and 50 percent less. I use the median time that is served in this article, because it is a more accurate measure of what researchers call a measure of central tendency.
Extremes (those who have been sentenced to a year or less versus those who have been sentenced to lifespan) those mathematical averages at both ends of the spectrum are strongly skewed and they confuse more than they offer clarity.
The information below is based on the first release of a prisoner, while they know that most will be re -established with release based on new crimes (non -technical violations) according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

That is hardly the interpretation of the average citizen of over-inchareration.
