The exuberant porcelain characters of Vipoo radiate optimism and solidarity – colossal

Born and raised in Thailand, Vipoo Srivilasa, who often just passes by Vipoo-moved to Australia. Based in Melbourne for over twenty years, his work engages with concepts of queerness, migration and spirituality through ceramics.

Vipoo emphasizes community, accessibility and an unwavering optimism in elegant yet playful porcelain sculptures (formerly). In a range of glazes, from cobalt to gold sheen to bright red, his dynamic characters gesture with their fingers in a “V” shape, usually signifying hopeful messages like “peace” or “victory.” Others appear to be dancing, waving or cheering.

Titles such as ‘Salutaris, the patron of well-being’ or ‘Calma, the spirit of tranquility’ identify many of the figures with a protective or uplifting role. Vipoo uses universal principles of strong relationships and communities, such as trust, honesty and solidarity.

Solo exhibition of the artist again/JOY at the Australian Design Centre highlights a wide range of stories about the migration of people to different parts of Australia. Based on personal stories and memories collected from strangers across the country, he shares various experiences that contribute to a collective story.
