Chicago police officer Krystal Rivera died after getting a single shot wound on her back, confirmed the Cooky Medical Examiner office on Friday.
Rivera and at least one other officer tried to arrest a suspect who was supposed to wear a firearm in the 8200 block of South Drexel Avenue around 9.50 p.m. on Thursday. The suspect fled in a nearby apartment.
The officers chased the suspect to the apartment, where they met a person, armed with a gun, according to CPD head inspector Larry Snelling. Rivera was shot during the meeting.
CPD officials can no longer be said that someone other than a police officer had fired a gun during the incident.
“We will only know that until the house search order is served,” said Snelling. “The proof that we collect usually tells us, and it tells us a story about what happened there.”
CWBCHICAGO has learned that at least one person who called 911 told the operator that they heard a single shot.
Snelling said that researchers had held “different” people in the area, including one person they specifically believe it was on site when officers were confronted by the person who had a gun.
Back -up officers hurried Rivera to the University of Chicago Hospital in a team car. During the transport, the vehicle caught up in the vicinity of 59th Street and Cottage Grove, so that officers force her to another patrol truck.
“Her young, energetic and daring approach to keep us safe is the memory we will honor,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “And let’s also pray for her partner, who acted bravely and quickly.”
Rivera raised a young daughter, Snelling said.
