A man from Chicago was sentenced on Friday morning to 20 years in prison for the fatal shooting of his friend while the victim flowed live on Instagram.
Deandre Adams, 25, started streaming on Instagram around 9 am on 7 February 2023 and continued as he walked to his mother’s house to do the laundry. His friend, Edwin Sims, who was then 24, met him in his mother’s house, and the two walked back to the apartment of Adams while the live stream continued, officials said.
Both men were seen in the bedroom of Adams in the 1600 block of East 78th while Adams continued the feed. Suddenly the Instagram -current Sims showed that fired several shots on Adams from behind and hit him in the back of the head and body, claimed public prosecutors.
Civil servants said that the live feed also brought Sims forward with a gun in his hand to end the Instagram feed after the murder. Surveillance video reportedly showed that Sims threw both phones from Adams in a waste in the Adams apartment building before fled the stage.
Allegedly Sims told the police that he did not kill Adams, but admitted that he was in Adams’s bedroom with the same distinctive sweatshirt as the murderer.
Officers of Justice initially accused him of multiple counts of murder in the first degree and the discharge of a firearm during an armed robbery. On Friday, the parties carried out a pleid agreement in which Sims plead guilty for a lesser indictment for second -degree murder, and the State dropped all other charges.
Judge Angela Munari-Petrone handed Sims the 20-year punishment. He receives 773 days of credit for the prison time for days that he has spent in prison since he was arrested and for participation in the Ged Prison program.
