CHICAGO – Prosecutors accuse a man of opening fire on a group of women during a Fourth of July dispute, killing one victim and wounding another. They say he searched the Internet for news of the crime.
Dimitri Sanders, 25, was restrained by Judge Susana Ortiz during a hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse.
In her detention order, Ortiz summarized the allegations, saying Sanders got into an argument with several women and then shot at them when their backs were turned in the 900 block of North Leclaire.
Cassandra Sims, 59, died, and a 29-year-old woman was also shot but survived.
Officials said Sanders was identified as the shooter in “several” photo lineups. His phone location data also placed him in the vicinity of the shooting at the time of the crime, according to the charges. Prosecutors said his phone search history showed he had looked up information about the shootings.
Court records show Sanders was charged with gun possession in October 2021, but prosecutors reduced that charge to a misdemeanor in a plea deal last year. Sanders was given a two-day sentence by Judge Michael Hood – the time he had already served.
