The number of shootings over the weekend in Chicago doubled from last year with 27 victims

The number of people shot and killed over the weekend doubled compared to the same weekend last year. While the total remains significantly below the long-term average, the increase underscores the ongoing challenge of continuing the public safety improvements through 2025 that Mayor Brandon Johnson often touts in the media.

Through the end of May, homicides were up 6% compared to 2025, and non-fatal shooting victims were up 7%, according to CPD. Johnson now faces the unenviable task of trying to maintain his narrative as the number of shootings appears to increase as the summer heats up.

Preliminary data shows that 23 people were shot and four people were killed this weekend, one by stabbing and three by gunfire. The total of 27 victims is a sharp increase from the 13 victims recorded during the same weekend last year, which was the lowest number for that weekend in at least a decade. according to HeyJackass.coman independent website that collects and analyzes crime statistics in Chicago. In the longer term, there is an average of eight fatalities and 36 non-fatal shooting victims on weekends.

There was one mass shooting this weekend, defined as four or more people shot in one incident. The shooting occurred Saturday evening as police were dispersing a gathering of more than 100 young people, mostly teens and pre-teens, near 47th Street and Martin Luther King Drive.

Police said a 13-year-old boy pulled out a gun and shot into a crowd around 9:39 p.m., wounding an 11-year-old boy, two 13-year-old boys and a 14-year-old boy. Officers arrested the alleged shooter about 20 minutes later in the 4600 block of South Calumet Avenue. All four victims were listed in good condition at local hospitals. The suspect is charged in juvenile court with four counts of serious injury by discharging a firearm and two counts of possession of a weapon.

In another high-profile incident, a 39-year-old woman was seriously injured in a shooting near Lincoln Avenue and Belden Avenue early Sunday morning. Chicago police initially responded to reports of gunfire around 2:59 a.m. but found no victims. About 45 minutes later, the woman arrived at Northwestern Memorial Hospital with gunshot wounds to her chest and thigh. Investigators later found shell casings in an alley in the 600 block of West Belden Street and found a trail of blood leading to the nearby bar district. Ald. Timmy Knudsen said the shooting happened outside a neighborhood bar.
