Mid-size SUVs have long been the most popular new vehicle type in Australia, with more than 80,000 more sold last year than the next largest market segment. 4×4 trips.
SUVs found a total of 704,557 new homes in 2024, accounting for a 56.9 percent market share, with midsize SUVs accounting for the majority of that with 287,637 sales.
That subcategory alone saw a 7.2 percent year-on-year sales increase compared to 2023, making it one of the fastest growing segments, while sales of 4×4 cars and large SUVs fell.
With that in mind, we turned to VFACTS’ sales charts to break down the top five best-selling midsize SUVs of 2024.
Our previous VFACTS coverage identified the top performers in the segment, but this list aims to provide a slightly more detailed analysis for those considering such a vehicle.

Toyota RAV4
Coming in second behind the Ford Ranger, the Toyota RAV4 recorded an exceptionally strong year in the Australian sales charts in 2024, when it recorded 58,718 deliveries.
Compared to 2023, it saw a 98.2 percent increase in sales, overtaking the evergreen HiLux ute to become Toyota’s best-selling car for the first time, as well as Australia and Toyota’s best-selling SUV (and of course the mid-size). large SUV).
Launched in May 2019, the fifth-generation RAV4 range is powered exclusively by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder hybrid powertrain consisting of an automatic CVT transmission, with front- or all-wheel drive and a claimed fuel economy ranging from 4.7 liters per hour . 100 km and 4.8 l/100 km. The RAV4 is available in nine variants and ranges in price from $42,260 to $58,360, excluding on-road costs.
All variants come with a five-star ANCAP safety rating, based on testing carried out in 2019, and are backed by Toyota’s five-year unlimited mileage warranty.

Mitsubishi Outlander
The last car to reach Australia’s overall top five in 2024 was the Mitsubishi Outlander, which saw a 13.8 percent year-on-year sales increase to finish with 27,613 deliveries for the year.
As the second best-selling model in the mid-size SUV category, the Outlander is also among the most configurable. Priced between $37,740 and $73,790, you can buy it as a five-seater or seven-seater, with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and with plug-in hybrid (PHEV) power.
Non-hybrid models are equipped with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, while the 2.4-litre four-cylinder PHEV powertrain offers higher power and better fuel economy. All powertrains send power to the wheels via a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
Range is covered by Mitsubishi’s 10-year, 200,000km conditional warranty, while PHEV models are covered for eight years or 160,000km. The fourth-generation Outlander was launched here in November 2021 and has a five-star ANCAP safety rating, based on testing carried out in 2022.
Topping From AutoExpert The 2024 Outlander ratings were the Exceed Tourer, which sits one rung below the GSR PHEV at the top of the range. It was rated 8.2/10 by James Wong in July.

Mazda CX-5
In eighth place overall and third in the segment is the Mazda CX-5, which ended the year down 1.1 percent from 2023, but still with a respectable 22,835 deliveries, despite this second-generation model dating back to March 2017 in Australia.
Three four-cylinder petrol engines are available for the eighth CX-5 range: 2.0 and 2.5 liter naturally aspirated and 2.5 liter turbocharged. Each engine has more power than the previous one, but at the expense of fuel consumption.
Both 2.5-liter engines are optionally available with all-wheel drive, while the 2.0-liter is reserved for the base CX-5 and is only available with front-wheel drive. All variants use a six-speed automatic transmission, while the price ranges from $36,590 to $55,000, excluding on-road costs.
Mazda backs its CX-5 with a five-year, unlimited mileage warranty, although it still doesn’t have an ANCAP safety rating after the rating expired at the end of 2023.
Two CX-5 reviews share the same record in 2024: 7.7/10. One was the CX-5 G25 Touring, reviewed by Jack Quick in April, and the other was the top-spec CX-5 G35 Akera, reviewed by James Wong in October.

Kia Sportage
The Kia Sportage ranked 10th in sales in 2024, and with a total of 22,210 deliveries for the year, it was the fourth best-selling midsize SUV, just behind the CX-5.
Available with four different powertrains – including a hybrid that went on sale earlier last year – the Sportage ranges in price from $32,995 to $55,420, excluding on-road costs, and uniquely opens with a six-speed manual transmission in the basic version of the Sportage S.
Other available transmissions include a six-speed automatic, an eight-speed automatic and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, with the hybrid claiming the highest power and fuel efficiency.
All Kia models are covered by a seven-year unlimited mileage warranty, and the Sportage comes with a five-star ANCAP safety rating, based on testing carried out in 2022.
The Sportage, which arrived here in November 2021 in fifth-generation guise, received a maximum rating of 8.2/10 in 2024 in a review published by James Wong in October, which focused on the newly added hybrid variants of the SUV.

Hyundai Tucson
The list is completed by the Hyundai Tucson, which delivered 19,061 deliveries in 2024, making it Australia’s twelfth best-selling car. The fourth generation of the Kia Sportage’s sister model, released in May 2021, was the fifth most popular mid-size SUV Down Under last year.
The Tucson ranges in price from $39,100 to $61,100, excluding on-road costs, and is available with three engines and five powertrain combinations. These include a non-turbo and two turbo engines, the latter also offered with hybrid technology, while front and all-wheel drive are available depending on the variant.
Like all its competitors except the Sportage, the entire range is exclusively automatic, with a typical torque converter fitted exclusively to all variants except those with the non-hybrid turbo engine, which features a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
Hyundai backs the Tucson range with a five-year unlimited mileage warranty, and the range comes with a five-star ANCAP safety rating, based on testing carried out in 2021.
