“Is a place, a feeling or an idea at home?” That is the elevated but immanent related question in the heart of Do Ho SuhThe most important survey now opened on Tate Modern. The London-based Korean artist (earlier) investigates notions of connectedness, connection, comfort, security and fame in large-scale installations that replicate his own houses in Seoul, London and New York, under a series of lively multimedia works.
Suh is known for its use of gossip fabric to create compelling, monumental installations. In The Genesis Exhibition: Do Ho Suh: Walk the House, The artist “investigates the complicated relationship between architecture, space, the body and the memories and moments that make us who we are,” says the museum.
Visitors are invited to walk through “Nest/S”, for example an extensive assembly of colorful, pure textile structures that link to each other to form a passage or leadership. Because the boundaries between interior and outside are blurry, we are invited to experience architecture from the perspective of movement and perception, and they emphasize how all our interactions with other houses or places are inherent.
Queries in the hiding place, safety and community are inextricably linked to how we observe at home, especially when for many around the world those basic needs are constantly in danger or without warning. “Suh asks timely questions about the Enigma of home, identity and how we continue and inhabit the world around us,” says a statement.
