CHICAGO – Three men carjacked a Logan Square pot dealer after they didn’t have enough money to buy his pot, officials say. Prosecutors asked Judge Shauna Boliker to arrest all three men on charges, but she decided to place them under electronic monitoring instead.
In a court filing, officials said Anthony Jones, 21, Trinity Peterson, 22, and Richard Tolbert, 20, made arrangements to buy some marijuana from a dealer on September 20. When their encounter arrived, the trio approached the passenger side of his 2021 Audi Q5, officials said.
Jones couldn’t come up with enough money to complete the deal, according to a lawsuit, so he allegedly asked the dealer to give them a ride to a gas station to pick up some cash.
The three men climbed into the backseat of the SUV, but the situation went sideways when one of the men allegedly displayed a gun and ordered the 33-year-old dealer and his 32-year-old female companion out of the car in the 1600 block of North Kedzie.
Prosecutors said in detention requests that all three men “threatened death” during the hijacking.
The Chicago Police Department’s carjacking task force found the car parked in the 3200 block of West Bloomingdale and placed it under surveillance, according to a CPD report. Police watched as Jones, Peterson and Tolbert allegedly got into the hijacked car and drove away.
Task force officers stopped the car and arrested the trio. Each faces a single charge of aggravated vehicle hijacking.
Peterson and Tolbert were both in custody at the time for pending charges filed against them following an incident in March.
According to a separate CPD report, Peterson eluded police during a traffic stop until he crashed into a curb and utility pole. Police allegedly saw Tolbert move a gun from his waistband to the seat as soon as they stopped the car.
Peterson was charged with felony fleeing and eluding, while Tolbert was charged with a misdemeanor charge of gun possession, according to court records.
