President Trump fired the two democratic members of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on Tuesday, which set up a challenge for a Supreme Court from 1935 that prohibits the resignation of FTC commissioners for reasons than ‘good reason’.

“Today the President has dismissed me illegally from my position as a federal trading commissioner, who violates the clear language of a statute and a clear precedent of the Supreme Court,” said Slaughter. “Why? Because I have a voice.
The FTC, which usually has five members, was founded in 1914 and is charged with maintaining consumer protection and antitrust laws. The Trump government has aggressively challenged the authority of independent regulatory authorities, including the FTC.
