Chicago – The new lawyer of Cook County proposes a new law that would help people who are responsible for illegally possessing firearms, so that they can legally possess the weapons. The office of Eileen Burke unveiled the idea on Friday.
First arms organizers who are charged with a violation of firearms at a low level, “according to the announcement in compliance with the law” can complete a distraction program under the proposal. Anyone accused of owning machine guns, an increasingly common situation in Chicago, would not be eligible.
“This program offers other authorities -abiding citizens without criminal history that have been arrested because they did not succeed in one [firearm owner’s license]A path to get into accordance with those license regulations, “said Burke’s office.
“There is no higher priority for this office than getting illegal weapons and the people they use from the street, and we will use every source at our disposal in that effort,” Burke said in the statement. “At the same time, we have to be smart about how we use our sources and how we influence people and communities. This account offers a different tool to find that important balance. “
According to the proposed law, program people could apply for a firearm license in the diversion program instead of waiting to meet all requirements. The office of Burke said they would receive their license when completing the program.
The current law requires to complete diversion participants to complete the program before they can apply.
