CHICAGO – The investigation into an incident in which an off-duty police officer shot at a car occupied by an off-duty Chicago police officer has taken an interesting turn.
As we reported a few days ago, an off-duty Blue Island police officer was taken into custody after allegedly shooting at an off-duty Chicago police officer’s truck during a road rage incident last Saturday evening, according to internal CPD communications provided to CWBChicago .
The Blue Island officer, who has more than two decades of experience with the suburban department, was subsequently released without being charged with wrongdoing.
Initial information indicated that the 24-year-old female Chicago officer, who joined the CPD last year, was in the front seat of a Dodge Sierra that was involved in a minor accident with the 47-year-old Blue Island officer around 5:03 a.m. . pm in the 4700 block of South Union.
A CPD crash report states that a police surveillance camera captured footage of the suburban officer driving out of a parking lot onto 47th Street without checking to see if the path was clear. The report said the video showed the suburban police officer “slamming on the brakes,” causing the truck the city cop was riding in to collide with his driver’s taillight.
After the crash, internal communications said, the suburban officer “drove alongside” the Chicago officer’s vehicle. He “pulled his weapon and fired one bullet in the direction of [the Chicago officer’s] vehicle, hitting the passenger door barrier and ricocheting off the windshield.”
Two men and another woman were in the pickup with the off-duty CPD officer, the crash report said, and the suburban police officer told investigators that one of them displayed a gun after the crash, putting him in fear for his life , a source said. .
The Chicago officer was taken to a hospital for a check-up because she is pregnant. No other injuries were reported.
