For more than three decades, textile artist Myrlande has been constantly depicting scenes from Haitian history, religion and daily life by the large-scale, labor-intensive beads embroidery of traditional Wodou flags. Now her work will participate in the permanent collection of the Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia, as part of a milestone gift of about 100 modern and contemporary Haitian artworks by collectors John Fox Sullivan and his deceased wife Beverly Sullivan.
The Sullivans were old members of the Haitian art company and Has traveled to the Caribbean country more than two dozen times since 1977 and collected an extensive collection of Haitian works of art in the course of four decades.
